Omg I just realised I hadn't posted this tma piece that I spent way too long working on in June. I'm so dumb.

Full disclosure this clearly was just an excuse to draw the panopticon. As a criminologist, a special interest of mine has always been prison design. So me and the panopticon go way back haha. Even wrote a whole research paper on the design's failures lol. Also resulted in collecting a whole bunch of quotes that give major tma vibes so here's a couple.

"The Inspector was in fact all-seeing: his gaze extending beyond the limit of the visible into the invisible." (Bozovic, 1995)

'Upon seeing the panopticon plans Edmund Burke (philosopher) remarked "there's the keeper, the spider in the web."' (Hummelbarb, 1968)

We were using charcoal in art class. Decided to draw the Panopticon again! I actually quite like my design for it, may need to mess with it a little more tho if I draw it again

Thinking about a guest for Mr spider. How it so deeply changed Jon to his core. How it’s permanently marked him and no one would ever believe him.

How terrified he is of spiders.

How Martin tries to tell him spiders are just creatures trying to live life the same as all of them. But he didn’t see what they do behind those doors. He didn’t see them take away someone from him right infront of his eyes.

Do you think about how spiders also started the worm infestation? His first true fear started all this. I firmly believe he was a puppet even before the web touched him. He was made for this.

The infestation only starting because he startled from something so small.

Do you think about how a spider took someone away right infront front of him once more? Annabelle taking Martin- his Martin? And how he refused to let them get away with that despite being unable to see them? How determined he was? He hates spiders and yet he faced that all for him. Do you think Martin was able to hear some of the tapes one at a time, to hear Jon’s trembling voice as he speaks of the lietners? Suddenly it all made sense on why Jon believed those statements.

Why he was so firmly against the one statement about the one person being encased by spiders and webs. Because Jon feared that would be him. Or maybe the person he once knew.

I think about how spiders started the infestation a lot. I think about how terrified and utterly changed and scared an eight year old Jon was after that book a lot.

I don’t know if any of this makes sense but I hope it does.

I like to think Jon was forever doomed to be the Eyes pet. He was always going to be touched by the web no matter what, and Elias knew this. He was doomed to be nothing more but a puppet, and the panopticon tugged on his chains until he couldn’t resist its pull anymore without choking. He didn’t choose to go up there himself. He never would have. His hand was being forced time and time and time again.

A panopticon is a prison built so that all the prisoners can be seen by the guard without being able to see the guard. The tower is the central part of the panopticon where the guard watches from, but the tower isn't the panopticon, the prison is. In tma s5 the tower is referred to as the panopticon, but the panopticon is the whole prison, not just the tower. The entire world is the panopticon, the tower is just the center of it.
